Garment accessories transition from 100% import reliance to near self-sufficiency

The garment accessories sector in Bangladesh has experienced remarkable growth since its inception alongside the readymade garment industry. Established in 1989 with 23 companies primarily engaged in packaging, the Bangladesh Corrugated Carton Manufacturers and Exporters Association has seen substantial expansion, with 1833 companies currently operating, averaging 59 new additions annually. Originally reliant on imported accessories in the ’80s, the sector has now achieved nearly 100% domestic production. With a workforce of seven lakh, including 10% women, and investments totaling Tk35,000 crore, the sector has become a thriving industry. It boasts a noteworthy export volume of $7 billion, contributing 15%-18% to the national exports of the garment industry, which holds an 84% share. In addition to deemed exports, the garment accessories sector directly exports around Tk1 billion, emphasizing its crucial role in Bangladesh’s economic landscape.
